FOUNDERS WEEK
by Kit Raymond

It may be October, but the costumes you see in shops and offices in downtown Brooksville between October 13th and 20th are not scary.  The Victorian clothing sets the stage for Founders Week, where this year Brooksville celebrates its 151st birthday.  The week is full of activities for the entire family, and downtown merchants are putting on their best show to invite you to experience their small town friendliness and historical pride.

The outfits at the Hernando County Rodeo, which opens 9 am Friday and continues through Sunday are not  vintage; they are the sturdy, workday clothes of modern cowboys who know a thing or two about roping, romping,  and riding-and want you to come see them put on a show.

After all that excitement, you'll want to sit a spell, so amble over to Brooksville for the Bandshell Bash on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 4 until 8.  Fea Funk, a rhythm and blues jazz group, will delight the crowd.  While you enjoy the music, you can admire the vintage cars that gather each month for the Cruise-In and treat your taste buds to the gourmet delights offered by restaurants participating in Taste of Brooksville (a definite change from rodeo food!).

Weekdays are a lovely time to stroll around downtown Brooksville, stopping at various shops to admire the unique offerings and sometimes-still-visible ancient architecture.  Weeks Hardware, (1913) is the oldest retail business in Hernando County and was started by one of the original families.  The marks of history are evident throughout the store.  Shoppers can view the original tin ceiling and the 95-year old freight elevator powered by human muscle and a thick rope over a giant pulley.  The antique wooden counters bear scars of tons of nails passed across by gnarled hands.   In dusty wooden bins, you will find maintenance items too old-fashioned for the "new-fangled" box stores to carry, and get a bit of homespun wisdom on the side.

Walking into Home at Sea is like being invited into a beautifully appointed home on the beach…and no wonder, because Home at Sea collaborates with Coastal Living magazine to provide accessories for featured homes.  With sunshine bright colors and watery pastels, this upscale coastal shop is a sea lover's paradise offering carved shore birds, woven furniture, outdoor barbeque accessories, and entertainment luxuries.  It is so "Florida" that you may be inspired to turn that tired den into a reflection of the glorious state in which we live-and if you stop by on Saturdays, Home at Sea offers a complimentary mimosa as you shop.  Or, save gas and log on to http://www.homeatsea.com.

Got a special "dress up" event on your calendar?  The women will fall in love with Patricia's Boutique, the best place in the county for formal, semi-formal, or just plain gorgeous attire.

Next door is the Rising Sun Café, where half the business in town is conducted over gourmet coffee, fruit slushies, homemade banana bread, fudgy brownies, and cookies so full of macadamia nuts and white chocolate that there is barely enough dough to hold them together.  Sally and Lisa are open during Market on Main Street (3rd Saturday of each month) and always have a "comfort food" Market Special such as sloppy joes, cinnamon roll and coffee.  Open weekdays from 7 to 2:30, internet users may set up their laptops, or use the ones at the café in the unrushed, friendly atmosphere.  Every Friday, from 12-2, Joy Pritz provides a violin backdrop for the diners' pleasure.

Cross the street and enter the land of memories at Antique Sampler Mall. Two full stories of antique furniture, collectibles, china and crystal that all carry the patina of time make this antique and consignment shop a wonderful place to refresh your sense of history.  Check out the original glass counter from Brooksville's Bacon drug store that stands at the rear of the store, or the dining set and china from the Mallis family estate.  From Civil War rifles and Indian War memorabilia to Highway Men paintings unique to Florida, from Victorian baby cribs, East Lake and Empire pieces to early Brooksvillian, you will marvel at the craftsmanship and beauty-and perhaps be inspired to start or add to a personal collection.

Brooksville City Hall Art Gallery, 201 Howell Avenue, is open for viewing Monday through Friday from 8 am to 8 pm.  Featuring local professional artists, the current exhibits are nature-themed, from lions, zebras, and housecats to aquatic sunsets, quiet lagoons, and ghost lilies.  On Wednesday, Oct. 17, stop by the Art Gallery reception from 5 to 7 pm where many of the artists will be present to meet the public and discuss their work.  The Great Brooksvillian Award will be presented to honor an individual who has had a positive impact on the culture and economy of Brooksville.  Birthday cake and refreshments will be served to celebrate Brooksville 151st birthday.

The Brooksville Women's Club, 131 S. Main St., is opening their doors from noon to 4 pm. Oct. 15-19 to invite you to an elegant Victorian Tea in a historic building.  Beautiful exhibits of antique tea sets, dolls, and jewelry provide the setting for hot, freshly brewed tea served in fine china and accompanied by scones and jam, cream pastries, lemon curd, and cucumber sandwiches.   Make a date with an old friend (or a daughter or granddaughter who would enjoy some undivided attention) and spend a relaxing afternoon catching up on the latest gossip or savoring special memories…this will be a moment to be cherished.  Dress up or come casual, but take advantage of this unique opportunity.

October bonfires are a perfect setting for an evening of story-telling on Thursday, Oct. 18 sponsored by Belle Lettres Writers Group at the Unitarian Universalist Church in the Pines, 7029 Cedar Lane, south of town.  Hotdogs and beverages will be available to munch on while the entire family is kept spellbound by "just-a-little-bit-scary" stories from the pens of Hernando County's published and aspiring authors.  The stories start at 6:30 pm and continue until 9:30.  There will be a small donation for people 11 or older.  Bring blankets and folding chairs; flashlights and bug repellent optional.  Call 754-9107 or 799-3147 for more information.

On Tuesday and Friday evening, Oct. 16 and 19, you may hear stories about Brooksville's early settlers as you walk among their graves at Brooksville Cemetery, 1275 Olmes Rd.  Listen as Hettie Warner, editor of the Brooksville Belle and head of the Belle Lettres Writers Group, "dishes the dirt" about some of the city's most inspiring and colorful personalities.  This brisk walk begins promptly at 6 pm, and will take about an hour.  Bring a flashlight and wear your walking shoes.  Apple cider and autumn desserts will be available.  There will be a $3 donation for people 11 or older.  Call 754-9107 or 799-3147 for information.
